Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season... 2 Timothy 4:2a.

1 Timothy 3:1 says, It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. (NASB)

Hebrews 13:17 says, Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.

  1. THE MINISTRY OF A LEADER
    1. leader is to shepherd the flock. 
      1. 1 Peter 5:2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness.
      2. Understanding what the ministry is will help us to have the proper attitudes and actions toward the flock.
      3. Shepherds lead the sheep they don’t drive them.
      4. Shepherds protect and care for the sheep.
      5. "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood." Acts 20:28
        1. The church (flock)
          1. Is important to God the Father because His name is on it the church of God.
          2. It is important to the Son because He shed his blood for it.
          3. It is important to the Holy Spirit because He is calling and equipping people to minister to the church.
    2. A leader is to devote himself to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.
      1. Acts 6:4"But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
      2. Leaders will be a men and women of prayer.
      3. Leaders will be a student of the Word.
      4. Leaders in a Church are to be in tuned with God.
  2. THE MANNERS OF A LEADER
    1. A leader must be an example to the flock.
      1. 1 Peter 5:3 ...nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.
      2. John 13:15 For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.
      3. 1 Tim 4:12 Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.
    2. A leader must learn to humble himself 
      1. 1 Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time
      2. James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
    3. A leader must learn to cast all his cares on Him.
      1. 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
      2. Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
    4. A leader must have self control
      1. 1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
    5. A leader must always resist the Devil.
      1. 1 Peter 5:9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
      2. James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
    6. A leader must remain firm in the faith.

      2. Proverbs 2:21 For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it.
      3. Romans 4:20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God.
